Waterskiing is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about skiing in northern Alabama. But, for those who want to give the alpine variety a try, the cold, wet stuff is less than two hours away.

If the kids take to the sport, or you are looking something a little more challenging, Ober Gatlinburg TN. offers a variety of trails from green circle to black diamond. In addition to the variety of trails, your visit can help revitalize the area, which recently suffered a devastating wildfire. While fire destroyed some of the cabins and attractions, the area businesses and residents have worked around the clock to get the area back up and running and ready for ski season. In addition to skiing the resort offers snowboarding, tubing, a kids snow zone, equipment rentals and lessons.

A little farther up the road in the mountains of North Carolina, you’ll find more advanced skiing for those who want to up their skiing game. Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley, N.C. boasts a peak elevation of 5,400 feet, with runs up to 3,500 feet and a vertical drop of 750 feet. With eighteen trails to choose from, there is something for skiers of every level. Just getting started or need to brush up on your skills, check out Cataloochee’s Snowsports School and private lessons.

Sugar Mountain Resort, while slightly lower at 5,300 feet peak elevation, has an even more diverse trail range, offering 20 beginner to double black diamond runs. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating. The area provides a variety of lodging options.

So, whether you’re a transplant from Aspen or a wannabe Von Trap, Huntsville may not be as far away from making your skiing dream a reality as you’d think.

Also, check out the Huntsville Ski Club, an excellent resource for avid southern skiers. The club organizes weekly ski trips in January and February at discounted rates to many of the country’s premier ski resorts. When they aren't skiing, members meet to hike and bike and for a variety of social activities throughout the year.
